What is Bharat 6 Phase 2 ? Why it is in Breaking NEWS, India?
Bharat 6 phase 2 is part of stage II level of the series, Bharat 6 emission norms. These norms had already come into effect from April 2023. These norms mandate real driving emission check within the vehicles & seek vehicle manufacturer to place an OBD system for real time monitoring of emissions. Implementation of these norms reduce by ~25%, the NOx vehicular emissions into the atmosphere . All vehicular manufacturers have also been keeping these norms in their checklist & consideration for their latest car/bike releases.
What is new petrol, E20 flex fuel? Why it is in Breaking NEWS, India?
The new petrol is nothing but called as E20 Flex fuel. Flex fuels are those that require blending of petrol with alcohol usually ethanol or methanol to achieve a particular composition. E20 Flex fuel means 80 % petrol & 20 % ethanol. Ethanol could also be generated from biomass and leads to be sustainable green initiative unlike gasoline. Phase 2 norms include compatibility of this new petrol variant with newer upgraded power trains. The country has seen E10 for longtime & E20 is only increase of ethanol blending from 10 % to 20% in the composition.
Impact of new petrol, E20 flex fuel on already existing cars/bikes in India?
The Already existing vehicles (E10 based vehicles) are not designed for E20 & may have following effects
Reduction in fuel efficiency by 6-7% for E0 cars (as per ET Auto, 2023 estimates)
Reduction in fuel efficiency by 1-2% for E10 cars (as per ET Auto,2023 estimates)
Metals & elastomers in contact with E20 flex fuel may have reduced structural performance.
Are new cars compatible to E20 & future changes?
The new or upcoming cars are compatible to E20 to comply Bharat 6 Phase 2 standards. Some manufacturers are already witnessing to comply as high as E85 (Petrol 15% & ethanol 85%) on trail basis for research. So, there
